Top 4 Economic Trends for the next two years

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused mainly by the mobility restrictions, are clearly still with us in 2022. However, over the next two years, we could see eventual economic stability as consumer demand, prices, and monetary policies are projected to move towards equilibrium.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought new trends and caused “the next normal” to arrive. Some of these trends have changed the world and will leave long-lasting effects. This article outlines some of the top economic trends that will affect the global economy, businesses, and society in general over the next two years and beyond.

Remote jobs

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the idea of remote jobs was in the air but not really a thing. The COVID-19 crisis entirely changed that as millions of people in a wide range of sectors transitioned to working from home. Now, the effects of the pandemic have calmed down, but most companies still use the method of remote working. This is not just because of the pandemic but because of the increase in the use of technology during the pandemic. This just made the world as a whole think faster and bring the future closer to us.

Companies (most especially high-skilled jobs in sectors like IT, insurance, and finance) will continue allowing their workers to work remotely over the next two years and beyond.

Shopping behavior

According to a survey by McKinsey, most customers have tried new means of shopping over the past year due to the mobility restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. And more than 60 percent of them say they would like to continue to do so. Over the next few years, brands that do not know how to capitalize on the new economic trends will be left behind. In Emerging Market and Developing Economies (EMDEs) like India and Brazil, for example, digital shopping is predicted to become a well-recognized trend – although from a low base, unlike customers in the United States and Great Britain.

The trend of online retail is real and is here to stay. E-commerce retail sales in the United States were forecasted in 2019 to reach 24 percent by 2024, but by July 2020, it had already reached 33 percent. The first half of 2020 alone saw an increase in online retail sales equal to that of the previous ten years. The trend is clear: most customers are moving online, and to satisfy them, brands have to catch up and establish themselves online too.

Green technology

The importance of environmental sustainability is being recognized day by day all over the world. Countries such as Oman, Qatar, and China are investing in green energy on a very large scale which would have been considered impossible years ago. The United States is taking environmental action by trying to move from coal to green technologies like electric vehicles and carbon-capture methods. Green technology growth creates opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, mobility, and energy. It is evident that green-technology companies have a huge role to play over the coming years.

Entrepreneurship

The COVID-19 crisis sparked a wave of innovation and launched a generation of entrepreneurs—situations like the COVID-19 crisis brought about a lot of inventions due to necessity. Since 2020, there has been a massive growth in digitization from online customer service to the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve operations. The healthcare sector also had massive changes with the arrival of biopharma and telehealth.

Entrepreneurs strive under disruption and chaos by trying to make the best out of it and solve problems. We all didn’t see this one coming up like the financial crisis in 2008. We can say there were disadvantages in the economic sector, but we can also take good news where we can get it. There has been a tremendous improvement in entrepreneurship which could go a long way in boosting economic activity and job growth over the next two years and beyond.
